Home, in many ways, is not a location but a contouring of one’s history, both material and imagined. Home can be a reminder of what is or what is no longer; it is a concept that has the potential for fullness and solace or absence and dissonance, which is shaped by constellations of people, place, and time. And so perhaps what is most objective in this nebular construct is, in fact, the stories that we tell.

SOUNDS LIKE HOME presents the notion of “home” through the lens of absence, as it emerges from recorded words, tones, and resonances generated by both body and landscape. Imaginaries of objects, spaces, places or people are shared through each artists’ interpretation of this call: to tell the story of what is not present in the time and place of this exhibition.

SOUNDS LIKE HOME is the collective work of 26 students representing 17 different countries, studying in the Erasmus Program at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (ASP). This exhibition is a special project for Spokojna Gallery, which has been funded by the European Union.

listening, telling, singing

It started with a most basic question: how do 26 people from 17 different countries and 16 different disciplines, who barely know one another, with a curator they’ve just met, who has never seen their work, create an exhibition together in eight weeks in a space they had not yet set foot in? As one might imagine, the task had its complications.

We began with a very open format: it was important to learn as much as we could from and about each other, and to try to establish trust and common goals as quickly as possible. We brainstormed, discussed different topics that were interesting and important, some of which included social media and internet-based reality, gamification, critique of the exhibition format, public intervention, sensorial experiences, and consumption. The day after our first meeting, Russia invaded Ukraine. With this, our conversation and energies shifted into a new space. We reflected on the notion of hope, on the human condition and cycles of war, on racism, Orientalism, Western lenses and biased media, regional politics, escapism, and magical realism. As all of these emotions and perspectives began to come together, ideas about language, home, and storytelling started rising to the surface. How could we create something in this environment that acknowledged the universality yet simultaneous deep stratification of the human experience?

We considered inhabiting the gallery space. Connecting the messy, mundane outside world with the abstracted, sterile, inside world. We discussed the totemic objects that everyone brought with them to Poland, and the potential of a process-based “living” (transforming) sculpture.  Through all of this, we landed on the notions of absence, of loss, of movement— migrational and otherwise, of home. The idea of evoking or creating something that doesn’t actually exist.

And so it was decided that the “artwork” would take place in the space of the psyche, and this would be aided by sound, transcription, and image. It would be a communication of what is not here with us, in this time and place, be it a recollection, a fiction, or a description… past, present, and/or future.  A hum, a whisper, a drip, a slice. A mythology, a heartbreak, a longing, an installation.

SOUNDS LIKE HOME presents the notion of home through the lens of absence, as it emerges from recorded words, tones, and resonances generated by both body and landscape. This exhibition represents the culmination of an intensive process of working together, and of re-defining and newly articulating ideas that are intangible, and deeply consequential.

This exhibition is a special project for Spokojna Gallery and has been coordinated between The Department of New Media and the Erasmus Program at the Academy of Fine Art in Warsaw. The project has been generously funded by the European Union.

SOUNDS LIKE HOME / BRZMI JAK DOM

Dom, w wielu aspektach, nie jest jedynie oznaczeniem miejsca, a raczej zakreślaniem własnej historii, tej materialnej i tej wyobrażonej. Dom może stać się znakiem, przypomnieniem tego, co jest i tego, czego już nie ma. Jest pojęciem, w którym zawarty jest potencjał pełni i ukojenia lub pustki i dysharmonii, kształtowany przez najróżniejsze konstelacje ludzi, miejsc i czasu. Być może najbardziej obiektywnym elementem tej mgławicowej konstrukcji znaczeń zawartych w słowie “dom” są opowiadane przez nas historie.

Wystawa BRZMI JAK DOM przedstawia pojęcie “domu” przefiltrowane przez soczewkę nieobecności, wyłaniające się niejako z nagrań słów, głosów, tonów i pogłosów, generowanych zarówno przez ciało, jak i krajobraz. Wyobrażenia przedmiotów, przestrzeni, miejsc i osób, ukazane w subiektywnym świetle interpretacji każdego z artystów dotyczą tego właśnie wyzwania, aby opowiedzieć historię tego, co nie jest obecne w czasie i przestrzeni tej wystawy.

BRZMI JAK DOM prezentuje wspólną pracę 25 studentów programu Erasmus+ na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie, reprezentujących 16 różnych krajów, która powstała w ramach projektu specjalnego dla Galerii Spokojna, finansowanego z funduszy Unii Europejskiej.
