RE CONSTRUCTION SHOE CONSTRUCTION

Shelly Satat-Kombor from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem

The idea of the workshop was deceptively simple.  Aiming to raise awareness about sustainable fashion, circularity and upcycling, workshop participants spent a month searching for old shoes in their closets, on the streets and in second-hand shops in order to breathe new life into them under the guidance of Shelly Satat-Kombor, an extraordinary designer from the Israeli brand Couple Of and also a lecturer at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Her knowledge, enthusiasm and ability to motivate to work allowed a group of several people to create prototypes of completely new, unprecedented forms of shoes within just a few hours.

However, before they started their inspiring work together, they completely destroyed the shoes they found, keeping all their parts. Then they worked in mini-groups, strengthening the sense of joint responsibility for the project, as well as inspiring, integrating and helping each other. From the remains of old, unwanted shoes, a new form was created - often allowing students to become familiar with different shoe designs. The designs were sometimes very avant-garde, but all of them were suitable for walking - the end of the task was a mini "fashion show".
